Not too long ago I was musing that The Hics made me think of Sade as being reinvented in a more modern (preferably electronic) context, only to read the same comparison in a splendid article about the British group a couple of days later. I find it fascinating that we have groups like The Hics in rotation because it represents an exciting future in music to me. No longer do singles have a to contain a nonsensical propagandized message or regurgitated beat to gain substantial popularity, but it can actually have substance again.
My focus falls on The Hics because their imaginative music is both subdued and bold. The singers Sam and Paula have a diabolically delicious chemistry and the rest of the band completely streamline their uncanny sound. Seeing their rise of popularity on platforms like Soundcloud and Youtube are continuous reminders to me that the internet is the only real frontier for artists to find listeners, this creates for a whole new entertainment realm where successes and failures can be plentiful but also momentous.
This mini rap about one of my favourite indie groups is really just an excuse to applaud the swooning talent of the six musicians that showcase and give hope to those that enjoy seeing quality music rising above the orthodox trash the DJs still seem to insist on playing on the radio. So I predict it’s only a matter of time that the radio will be oozing the soulful sounds of the six piece from London.
